Rabbits can make a fantastic addition to your family. But it’s important to remember that they can be expensive to look after, can live a long time, and need lots of care and commitment throughout their lives. Remember, rabbits should have:
- A good clean home: pet rabbits need separate places to eat, sleep and go to the toilet.
- Hidey-holes: rabbits are easily spooked and must be able to hide if they feel afraid.
- A good diet: rabbits need loads of lovely roughage - clean grass to graze and heaps of fresh hay.
- A bed and blanket in a warm place.
- Fresh water to drink whenever they’re thirsty. Use a drip-feed water bottle, but check every day that it works.
- Lots of exercise: rabbits are great athletes and need plenty of space to stretch their legs and have fun.
- Safe things to gnaw: rabbits need to gnaw and nibble to help keep their teeth in good shape
- Good company: A pet rabbit left on its own for long periods will feel very lonely and unhappy.
- Health checks at least once a year. Regular vaccinations can help prevent them becoming seriously ill.
- To be taken to a vet if they are ill or injured.
- To be looked after when you’re away on holiday.
